While we were waiting to close on our new house I was hard at work behind the scenes tirelessly digging for inspiration and creating a mood board. If I’m being honest it wasn’t so easy and I found myself in a bit of a rabbit hole. There are so many beautiful interiors to be inspired by it was hard to choose which direction to go; dark and moody, light and bright, traditional, modern. I can truly appreciate all of these approaches for different reasons.

This particular mood board is going to be the reference point when designing our entire house. While every room is going to be different and have its own individual mood board, each one will tie back to this “master” moodboard to ensure cohesion throughout the home.

For our new house in Florida, I want to challenge myself and go more modern than I would have in the Hudson Valley. Up in NY, I was fascinated by the traditional New England Style and a warm color palettes with lots of heavy fabrics and coziness. Florida calls for something a little cooler. I want to bring in light, modernity and a balancing act of traditional and coastal in the decor and textiles. I will keep the hard fixtures classic this way if and when we want to change things, we won’t be looking at major renovations. It will all be cosmetic face lifts.

I’ve always been drawn to earth tones and the contrast of dark and light found in nature. I love building visual interest with texture and verticality, rather than color and pattern. I’ve always admired natural elements so we will be using neutral textiles, jute rugs, natural stones and other elements you can find in nature. We will be using a neutral white as a base and mixing in beiges, browns, hints of sage, and always a little black to ground the space and create contrast.

Let me know what you think about the mood board and the direction I’m going in the comments below. Would you approach a Florida interior differently?
