How to Create Eye-Catching Pinboards
- Determine the size you want for your pinboard, and cut the foam board to size using a drywall knife (or any serrated knife). My pinboards are 6 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide. Since I was creating three of them, I had to cut three pieces of foam board to the desired dimensions.
2. Using fabric scissors, cut the burlap to the size of your pinboard, plus 6 inches on each side for fabric allowance.
3. Place the foam board in the center of the fabric. Wrap the extra fabric around to the back of the foam board and staple along the edge every 2 inches or so. As you work your way around the board, make sure the fabric is pulled nice and tight. To finish the corners, fold the fabric as if you’re wrapping a present. Note: When stapling the fabric, be sure to apply firm pressure; otherwise, the staples won’t hold in the foam. I also used sewing pins to help hold the fabric in place, but this step is optional.
4. Paint the pinboards in a crosshatch pattern using either a paint roller or a paintbrush. While painting in this pattern isn’t necessary, it adds more texture and visual movement, so I think it’s worth taking the extra time to do it.
5. Once the paint is dry, it’s time to hang them on the wall. I placed my screws 1 inch in from the edges and drilled a pilot hole to make it easier for the screws to go into the wall. Using a tape measure and level, determine where you want the pinboard to hang. Lightly mark the top two corners on the wall with a pencil for reference. Then, drill your brass screws into the wall accordingly.
And there you have it—it really is that easy: eye-catching pinboards and artwork. Will you be giving this a try?
